Since we parted ways with Jon, Griff and I have been considering ways to fill that space. Do we get a bass player? A keyboard player? Both? Since we are currently writing a new record it’s not possible to bring someone into the middle of this process. We’ve played together for so long that when we are just jamming we naturally sync by doing fills at the same time and, as our similar musical tastes act as conductor, we go heavy and then pull back mutually. Auditioning right now would yield no results, or at least only unfortunate ones for both sides. So, in order to fill what we considered at first to be a gap, we have just written the best music we can get our heads around without the use of electronics or bass. It feels right, sounds perfectly empty, and providing that it’s recorded correctly (which I know it will be) the music will be richer than anything we’ve done in the past.
So, unless Chris Ross from the original Wolmother lineup is looking for a gig, we are now a 2 piece.
One problem we’ve encountered is how to perform any of the old stuff since we’re abandoning the backing tracks in favor of a live setup. I’ve since solved that problem and will run electronics when necessary from my laptop on stage. This way we don’t have to adhere to the rigid backing tracks and I can extend and warp electronics on the fly. I also started an electronic/live track that will be kind of a “jam”, done somewhat differently every time we play…
