Been destroying it in the studio, coming up with the best rock music I’ve ever been a part of. Pulled out the synth again and gave it my best while Griff held it down. In all the electronic production I was doing before and now the live composition, a very obvious but extremely elusive theme has developed: keep it simple (duh right?). I’ve been noticing that in so much music there are a million sounds fighting each other in the background for prominence, but I put on a Stooges record the other day and there’s almost nothing going on and it sounded so fucking dry, right there in my living room with me… There is no perfect music or art but this was working.
I understand that records can’t sound like that anymore, they’ll be louder and more genre specific, but I love how simple the instrumentation is. I’ve made things overcomplicated in the past.. Using sounds that were never meant to be done live on stage. Can’t do that any more, almost for political reasons. Us blue states will play live while the red states fake it. I never saw the backing tracks as cheating, even though some would argue with me on that… I can tell you one thing though: It’s waaaaayyyy easier to make music without it (well, rock music). Having to sequence and design all the music detracts from it’s natural power. It’s like musical viagra. Fuck it.
